Camcorders are comprised of several parts and it is important to understand them before using one of these devices.

A camcorder or video camera recorder is a portable, self-contained electronic device whose primary function is recording video. Although camcorders can vary somewhat in their usage, depending on the model, they all consist of the same basic components. It is important to identify the parts or components of a camcorder, so it can be used properly.

Camcorder

Since camcorders are wireless, they operate by getting their electrical source from special batteries. There are various models of camcorder, which have different lengths of battery capacity and allow for vary amount of recorded time when the battery is completely charged. Lithium ion and NiCd are the two most common rechargeable batteries used in camcorders. Camcorders have evolved from analog to digital and offer many features. Digital cameras can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars in price, depending on the features.

Lens and Imager

A camcorder's lens is the light path of the camera and is made up of several pieces that adjust as the camcorder operates to enable the user to capture images and videos. The adjustments include different parts such as the aperture, which enables the user to control and adjust the light. The zoom feature allows the user to adjust the field viewing area that is covered by the lens. Any form of motion can be captured by the shutter speed of the lens.

A camcorder's imager acts as the device's eye and operates by housing the photosensitive devices. The imager enables the camcorder to operate by developing the electronic video signal from the light captured in a relatively complex electronic process. The images are displayed by the screen feature that most camcorders are equipped with today. These screens are rotated about 90 degrees along the horizontal line and about 290 degrees along the horizontal line. Digital camcorders have become extremely popular because the user can see what is being recorded in real time on an external screen.

Recorder

A camcorder's recorder provides very complex signaling functions that capture the video signals and transfers them to the recording medium such as DVD. The camcorder's storage and recording devices are vital components. The record function has several signal-processing steps, but the recording process may involve some noise and distortion into the stored video, such that playback of the stored image may not possess the same detail as the live video feed. However, most camcorders have a recorder or controlling section that enables the user to switch the record into playback mode for reviewing the video. There is also an image control section that controls focus, exposure and white balance.
